Situated in North Nagpur, Prabhag No 3 is becoming a major political platform for every party as the constituency is set to witnessed close battle of power again. In the upcoming NMC elections, the Prabhag is likely to repeat the battle of supremacy between both major parties - BJP and Congress. Over nine years’ delay in civic elections has increased public expectations as the residents are hopeful of their long-pending basic issues being resolved by fresh representatives. The Prabhag consists of different communities and religion residing there from many decades. Muslim vote bank will be a game changer for all political parties.
Of 4 seats, BJP won 3 in previous polls
In the 2017 NMC polls, the BJP won three seats while Congress got one. However, it was not an easy task for BJP candidates as they faced tough challenge from Congress candidates in all four constituencies of the Prabhag. Parasram K Manwatkar of Congress taste victory in 2017 elections as he drubbed BJP’s Vijay H Parve by just 57 votes for Prabhag No 3A seat. Whereas, remaining three seats 3B, 3C and 3D were won by BJP. For these three victories, BJP faced really tough challenge from Congress’ Sanjay V Pendam and Shahina Anjum Ansari for 3B and 3C seats. Whereas, individual candidate Surekha S Talwekar lost the battle for 3D seat to BJP’s Naseembano M Khan. The sitting MLA from North Nagpur, Congress’ senior leader, Dr Nitin Raut, who has a strong base is likely to disturb the balance. For, Congress has renewed confidence to challenge the BJP once again.

Chhindwara Railway Line is boundary of the Prabhag and the area close to the tracks remains neglected. As the Prabhag is situated close to Pili river, which has become an open drainage for the city, the problem gets aggravated during monsoon season. Brick kilns in Vitabhatti area are major sources of pollution affecting the air quality of not just Prabhag No 3 but entire city. Residents often face public transport problems due to limited Aapli bus service.
Mixed social composition of voters
The population density (64,371) is very high in the Prabhag, including 9,652 Schedule Caste and 5,005 Schedule Tribes. The ward has a large number of Muslim population. Apart from this, the Prabhag is home to OBC communities, and an increasing number of North Indians, particularly close to Kalamna area. This social diversity is going to be a challenge for every party to attract voters on their side.
