PANICgripped commuters at the
iconic Arch Bridge on Monday
afternoon when a mentally
unstable man climbed nearly 50
feet up the structure, threaten
ing to jump into the Upper Lake.
The swift intervention of the
Talaiya Police and the Bhopal
Municipal Corporation’s (BMC)
rescue squad prevented a poten
tial tragedy. The incident
occurred around midday when
the man, who was semi-clothed,
scaled the high arch of the bridge.
As he began shouting and ges
turing to jump, a large crowd
gathered, leading to traffic con
gestion and alarm among
passers-by. Dial-112 was imme
diately alerted, following which
teams from the Talaiya police
station and BMC divers reached
the spot
.
Recognising the gravity of the
situation, Talaiya Station House
Officer (SHO) Deepak Dhariya
spearheaded the rescue efforts.
To mitigate any risk, BMC divers
were deployed in the lake with
rescue boats directly beneath the
arch. After nearly an hour of care
ful negotiation and tactical
manoeuvring, the rescue team
managed to secure the man and
bring him down safely. The suc
cessful operation was met with
a sigh of relief from both the
administration and the onlook
ers. Initial inquiries revealed that
the man is mentally distressed
and is frequently seen begging
in the Kamala Park area.
.
Due to
his unstable condition, the police
were unable to gather coherent
information regarding his iden
tity or the reason behind his
actions.
“Our primary objective was to
ensure the individual’s safety
without causing him any injury.
The co-ordinated effort between
the police and the municipal res
cue team was instrumental in
resolving the crisis peacefully,”
said SHO Dhariya. The man is
currently under police supervi
sion, and efforts are underway
to locate his family
