Fire incidents in the narrow alleys of old Nagpur housing the wholesale markets of city continue to test the resilience of Fire Brigade system as again on Tuesday, the fire fighters faced quite a tough situation handling flames in a four-toreyed commercial building at Jagnath Budhwari. The early morning fire at Sai Garments, located at Deoghar Mohalla, sparked a major tension as the area is densely populated and has establishments very close to each other. Given the location of the spot, the Ganjipeth Fire Brigade station received first call around 6 am. After surveying the spot, the firemen noticed that the flames were blazing out from the upper floor.

The shop deals with ladies garments that were stocked to capacity throughout four floors. The flames spread pretty fast throughout the floor and the fire fighters laid the pipes for 60 meters as the tenders were parked on the main road due to narrow lane. The fire fighters placed the ladders to reach upto the floor to take the aim at the flames. As the fire was quite big additional fire fighting team from all over the city was diverted to the spot. The main aim was to prevent spread of the flames to adjacent buildings that could then very hard to control. Additional teams from Civil Lines, Wathoda, Sugat Nagar, Lakadganj, Narendra Nagar, Kalamna fire brigade stations too reached to help their comrades in the fire fighting operations.

The operation to put out the flames lasted for over six hours as fire fighters had very little room to manoeuvre. Mainly, the target was keeping the water lines continuous and small lanes presented many challenges to fire fighters. On the other hand, the presence of highly combustible material in the shop means the spread of flames was quite fast. Finally around noon, the fire fighters managed to finally extinguish the flames. In the meantime as dawn broke out a large crowd of onlookers and other traders in the area also arrived in the Gandhibagh market. The owners, Dhomani family, then went through the four floors and estimated the losses to be around Rs 2.5 crore. The damaged material includes lehangas, salwar suits, sharara, lacha, raw material, air conditioners, coolers, fans, LED television sets, computers etc.
