prabhag no 6

Prabhag No 6, may pose challenge to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as people in its all four wards voted for Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). This prabhag is a part of core North Nagpur. Once it was a stronghold of Republican Party. Later, Congress established supremacy and surprised everyone when in 2014 it voted for Dr Milind Mane of BJP in Assembly polls. In Municipal corporation polls it keeps supporting BSP. In the 2017 municipal corporation polls, BSP won all four seats.

2017 nmc election prabhag no 6

Earlier, North Nagpur remained neglected as far as development works are concerned. But after 2014, the Fadnavis-led BJP Government provided equal share to this area in terms of development. The roads are constructed, bridges are developed, gardens are given new look, healthcare facilities too are paid attention. It will reflect in the coming polls and BSP can not go to polls with a ‘taken for granted’ approach. Whether BSP is ready to face tougher Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) or succumb or BJP comes up with new strategy remains to be seen on January 15, 2026.

It is BSP all over

This is probably the only prabhag where candidates of national parties like BJP and Congress could not earn even second position. IUML candidates had a strong fight with those of BSP candidates. Although it had a clean sweep, BSP had to face neck to neck to fight from IUML. In Prabhag 6 D, the BSP’s candidate Ibrahim Taufiq Ahmed defeated his nearest rival Aslam Rasheed Khan of IUML by mere 211 votes. More or less trend was similar in three other wards of Prabhag 6.

SCs, STs hold dominance

The Prabhag is a mix of Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) voters along with Muslims, Halba Koshti, Kunbi with a population of 67,777. The SC population has a domination in the Prabhag which is evident from the official figures. According to data, the Prabhag has a whopping 22,071 SC voters and 4,268 STs.

 Localities

the Prabhag covers Mahendra Nagar, Ekta colony, Yadav Nagar, Sudam Nagar, Khante Nagar, Yashodip colony, Farukh Nagar, Teka, New Settlement, Devi Nagar, Panchsheel Nagar, Adarsh Nagar, Sujata Nagar, Housing Board quarters, Dr Ambedkar Park, Panchkuwa, Maharshi Dayanand Nagar, Nirwan Ghat, Muslim Graveyard, Taj Nagar, Bunkacolony, Ashok Nagar, Baba Budhaji Nagar.

Unresolved civic issues

The civic issues that need to be closely looked after are: dug up roads, waste water line, rampant construction affecting traffic movement. People are facing water shortage issue as NMC failed to deliver water 24x7. To add to the woes, sewage line frequently gets choked. Plea at NMC about the problems remains unheard. Some residents raised an issue of almost non-functional NMC Health Clinic. A resident said, the leaders announced that the Urban Health Care Centres run by NMC would be improved but in vain.
