In a significant move to improve the city’s Air Quality Index (AQI), the Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) has launched an ambitious initiative to tackle road dust and airborne pollutants. Under this plan, 400 existing waste collection vehicles are being repurposed as ‘Sprinkler Vehicles.’ This innovative recycling of resources ensures maximum utility of the municipal fleet while directly addressing respiratory health concerns. Focus on Micro-Level Dust Control: The primary objective of this scheme is to pre-treat roads and narrow alleys with water before sanitation workers begin their manual sweeping.

Traditional sweeping often kicks up fine Particulate Matter (PM10 and PM2.5) into the atmosphere, posing severe health risks. By wetting the surface first, the dust remains grounded, preventing it from mixing with the air. The BMC has drafted a blueprint to deploy 19 to 20 such vehicles in each of its 21 zones.

To date, 14 converted vehicles have already hit the streets, while the ‘retro-fitting’ process for the remaining 386 units is currently underway on a war footing. The project is funded by a special Rs 30 crore grant from the Central Government under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP).

While the project initially faced delays due to a lack of visionary planning, it gained significant momentum following a stern review meeting conducted by the Chief Secretary. The administration is now focused on the rapid execution of the project to meet air quality benchmarks. Municipal Commissioner Sanskriti Jain clarified that while modern sweeping machines and large water foggers are being used on arterial roads, these smaller repurposed vans are crucial for the city’s denser residential areas.

“Our primary goal is to reach every narrow lane where heavy machinery cannot navigate. With 14 vehicles already active and the full fleet nearing completion, dust control will be seamless across every corner of the city,” Jain stated. These vehicles are being equipped with specialised water tanks and high-efficiency nozzles designed to conserve water while providing maximum coverage.
