The Manish Nagar underpass has long been vulnerable to water-logging during monsoon, but this time the situation is far more serious and puzzling. For the past several days, the underpass has remained flooded even without rainfall as water from drainage or sewage lines is accumulating in it.
Commuters using the underpass are facing severe inconvenience as nearly a foot of foul-smelling water has collected inside the underpass.
The stagnant water emits a strong stench. Many two-wheeler riders have completely stopped using the underpass and have instead started using the newly-constructed Somalwada underpass to avoid the mess.
Chaitanya Ghate, a resident of Manish Nagar, said water has been accumulating continuously for several days. “Earlier, there was always a little water during rains, but this time it is much deeper and there has been no rain.
The level has gone up to almost one foot,” he said and pointed to what he suspects is leakage from underground drainage or sewer lines.
Another resident expressed frustration over the lack of response from the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC). The NMC official came after two days and removed the water using pumps but the water is again accumulating in the underpass.
The NMC officials must take proper step and ensure that the water would not again accumulate in the underpass, he demanded.
Adding to the problem is poor illumination inside the underpass. Several lights are non-functional which make the waterlogged stretch even more dangerous. Residents say that despite crores of rupees being spent on its construction, basic maintenance has been ignored by the authority. The underpass users are now demanding proper pumping out of the water, repair of drainage lines and restoration of lighting.
