In a significant move to curb rising pollution levels and ensure a cleaner environment, the Madhya Pradesh Pollution Control Board (MPPCB) is set to install Continuous Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Systems (CAAQMS) at one more strategic locations in the capital.

The project, estimated to cost approximately Rs 1.30 crore, will enable live monitoring of air quality across a vast part of the city, including industrial and residential hubs. The board has specifically identified the Govindpura industrial area and Barkatullah University (BU) campus for the new installations.

The selection of Govindpura aims to keep a strict vigil on industrial emissions and ensure compliance with environmental standards. On the other hand, the system at Barkatullah University will provide real-time air quality data for a major academic and residential belt, covering areas such as Piplani, Minal Residency, and Raisen Road. Currently, Bhopal operates similar systems at

TT Nagar, Paryavaran Parisar (Bittan Market), and Kohefiza. Re-Tendering for Transparency: The project recently faced a minor delay as the initial tender process had to be scrapped due to technical reasons after only a single vendor showed interest. Following the board’s policy to ensure healthy competition,

fresh tenders have now been invited. Officials are optimistic that the site identification and installation will be completed within the current financial year. Once functional, the data from these four major centres will be directly transmitted to a centralised control room. This will not only simplify the identification of pollution sources but also empower citizens to check the Air Quality Index (AQI) of their respective areas via mobile apps or digital displays.
