Angel Chakma from Tripura was killed by group of youths in Dehradun who called him ‘Chinese’ and “Momo”.

AMIDST the outrage over the murder of a Tripura student in Dehradun, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami spoke to his father on phone on Monday and assured him of strict punishment for the accused, officials said. Angel Chakma from Tripura was killed by group of youths in Dehradun who called him ‘Chinese’ and “Momo”. Angel’s father, Tarun Chakma, who is currently posted in Manipur with the Border Security Force (BSF), alleged that ‘racial slurs’ were hurled at his son during the assault.

Dhami, in a phone conversation with Angel Chakma’s father Tarun Prasad Chakma, expressed grief over murder of his son and said he is personally saddened by the incident and can understand the pain of his family, they said. The Chief Minister said that children from India and abroad come to Uttarakhand to study, and such an environment has never existed here before. He said, “Therefore, this incident is sad for all of us also.” Dhami said that the Government will take strict action in this matter. He told Tarun Prasad Chakma that five accused have been arrested in connection with the incident, while another accused is suspected to have fled to Nepal, and efforts are being made to arrest him by declaring a reward.

Angel Chakma, a 24-year-old final year MBA student at a private university here, was seriously injured when he was allegedly attacked by some youngsters with a knife and a bracelet on December 9. He died on December 26, after being hospitalised for 17 days. According to the deceased victim's family sources in Agartala, the incident occurred on the evening of December 9 in the Selaqui area of Dehradun. A written complaint was lodged with the police by the victim's brother, Michael Chakma. As per the complaint, the two brothers -- Michael and Angel -- had gone out to buy essential items when they were stopped by a group of youths, allegedly under the influence of alcohol.

What began as an argument soon escalated into violence, with the attackers allegedly hurling racial slurs and making derogatory remarks about their appearance. When the brothers objected, the situation turned into a brutal physical assault. Killing of Tripura student in Dehradun a horrific ‘hate crime’: Rahul Gandhi: LEADER of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Monday called the killing of a Tripura student in Uttarakhand’s Dehradun a “horrific hate crime”, as he accused the ruling BJP of “normalising” hate. In a post on X, Gandhi said hate does not appear overnight. “What happened to Anjel Chakma and his brother Michael in Dehradun is a horrific hate crime,” he said.
