Dr Moharil said ideas should be discussed among a group of
people because you never know something new might come up
“Just as one man can never climb the moon, similarly one man alone can not complete the research” Dr Sanjiv Moharil shared his thoughts in an exclusive conversation with ‘The Hitavada’. He said research is a collective efforts, ideas generate when people come together discuss on a certain topic.
The extensive commitment to research and passion for teaching demonstrated by Dr Sanjiv V Moharil, a respected figure from the Nagpur University (NU) Physics Department, is a major source of inspiration for younger generations. Dr Moharil’s journey, rooted in Yavatmal and cemented at NU through MSc, PhD and DSc degrees, has significantly elevated the university’s presence on the international scientific stage.
Dr Moharil credits the supportive research environment at the NU Physics Department and the guidance of his PhD mentor, Dr B T Deshmukh, for shaping his career. From 1983 until his retirement in 2014, he served as a lecturer, reader and professor, guiding numerous students while simultaneously pursuing his research interests.
“I used to go to Pune University Library to gather information and prepare notes and now we can access every information on the internet, making research work easy” he shared the difference between working in his initial days and working now.
His primary research areas are Luminescence, Solid State Lighting and Radiation Dosimetry.
He conducted crucial applied research, often at institutions like the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), which contributed to materials for radiation measurement and technologies related to LEDs and CFLs. The funding secured from 17 successful research projects allowed him to establish well-equipped laboratories at NU and several other regional colleges, fostering a research culture.
He added some points from his life journey which will direct young researchers towards the success of their research. “Do not be afraid of competition, Make groups and discuss your ideas, Be self-confident, Be open to everyone and increase your knowledge as it will help in the research work.”
Dr Moharil’s scholarly output includes over 352 research articles and seven patents. He has successfully guided 36 researchers to their PhDs.
His ongoing dedication, even 11 years after retirement, keeps him actively involved in research, mentoring and academic discussions globally.
Dr Moharil’s life exemplifies the power of hard work, persistent curiosity and scientific integrity.
