Opposition boycotts tea party on eve of Winter Session of State Legislature stating that State is trampling upon parliamentary traditions
REFERRING to vacant positions of Leader of Opposition in both Houses of State Legislature, Opposition termed it as a grave assault on Constitutional principles on part of Mahayuti G o v e r n m e n t . Ruling party is trampling upon historical parliamentary traditions in Maharashtra, so the Opposition decided to boycott tea invitation of State Government on the eve of the Winter Session. This was stated by Vijay Wadettiwar, Congress Legislature Party Leader in Maharashtra Assembly on Sunday, on the eve of Winter Session of State Legislature. Wadettiwar and later Bhaskar Jadhav, Leader, Shiv Sena (Uddhav BalasahebThackeray), said, the invitation was individual in nature whereas as per norms, the same is extended to Leader of Opposition. So the Opposition camp- Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT) and Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar) rejected Chief Minister’s invitation for tea. Despite having brute majority, the Government harbours fear that its misdeeds might get opposed, hence it is not keen for appointment of Leader of Opposition. Since 1936 when Maharashtra Legislature came into being, it is for the first time that posts of Leader of Opposition in both the Houses are vacant, said Jadhav. Addressing mediapersons at Congress Legislature Party office in Vidhan Bhavan campus, Wadettiwar quipped that as of now the bickering among the Mahayuti partners has pushed Maharashtra to brink of financial collapse. On every front of governance, the State Government has faltered even as Congress leader reeled off figures from NCRB, wherein Maharashtra now ranks no. 1 in farmers suicides, attacks on women and minor girls. Joining the chorus, Bhaskar Jadhav put across the history to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) camp, that in 1985 when BJP had just 16 members, it was given the Leader of Opposition post.
The same was done later in 1996, and in fact in Upper House (Legislative Council), when R S Gavai was lone member on Opposition bench, he was named Leader of Opposition. In fact, the Congress Government was truly upheld the spirit of Constitution of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar and was honest about upholding the parliamentaryprinciples, unlikecurrent stance of BJP. The ruling alliance came to power on promises to giving loan waiver to farmers, but even as ryots are on suicide spree, the Mahayuti has forgotten its promise. Also, the promisedRs 2,100underLadki Bahin Scheme has not materialised, which showcases the betrayal of massive faith reposed by voters in Maharashtra, Wadettiwar further claimed. During 2024, about 2706 farmers committed suicideinState andin 2025 about 1183 have already ended their lives and yet the Mahayutipartnersarehaggling for power share among themselves. Not content that the Mahayutipartnersareoutright insulting farmers, citing the statement of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar belittling the ryots seeking loan waiver. The ruling alliance has bankrupted the State coffers and now it is saddled with loans of Rs 9.32 lakh crore. Jadhav: Referring to rules, he said, there is no provision of Deputy Chief Minister post and yet there are two of them and about Leader of Opposition, theGovernmentis insulting theConstitution and DrAmbedkarbykeeping them vacant.TheOppositionsought discussion on farmers’ relief package in House but Government rejected it. This shows that real intention of Governmentas theyknowonce announcement in made in House, it has to be honoured. As to announcement is made outside, they are not binding. Highlighting the anti-democratic stance of current Government, he said that not a single penny is given to Oppositionmembers fordevelopment. All the funds are diverted to ruling party MLAs and the commission from that was used for malpractices in elections. The controversy in the current Nagar Palika and Nagar Panchayat was unbecoming for State of Maharashtra.Infact, onewondered whether State Election Commission was conducting the elections or obeying the diktats of Government, as all the ruleswere shown thedoor. Anil Deshmukh: NCP (Sharad Pawar) leader Anil Deshmukh launched a scathingattackonMahayuti for ignoring theinterest of orange and sweetlime growersin pursuing their exports to Bangladesh. The State Government acted fast and ensure export of onion to Bangladesh, but why same eagerness is missing in terms of horticulture. Same has put the orchards and farmers in Vidarbha on mat. Nitin Raut, Anil Parab, Sunl Prabhu, Abhijeet Wanjari and other leaders of Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) were also present during media interaction.
‘Publish white paper on land allotment in State’ THEOppositionhaswritten to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavisseekingawhitepaper on allotment of Government lands in the State. Vijay Wadettiwar said they are also going to raise the issue and claimed theStatehas favoured Adani group which has been handed over Rs 9 lakh crore of land at throwaway prices.
