Ancient Shiva Temple at Gumadpal: A lesser-known marvel of Bastar

 

 

Located amidst the lush green landscapes of Bastar, the village of Gumadpal is home to a remarkable yet lesser-known heritage site—an ancient Shiva temple known as Singhaigudi. This exquisite sandstone structure, dating back to the 13th-14th century AD, is a testament to the architectural mastery of the Kakatiya dynasty. According to explorer Jitendra Nakka, the temple is located about 12 kilometers from Tirathgarh on the Darbha-Katekalyan State Highway, close to the banks of Chingitarai pond. It is 15 kilometers from the Katekalyan block headquarters in Dantewada district and 42 kilometers from Jagdalpur, the divisional headquarter. This relatively remote location adds to its charm, as it remains untouched by the bustling tourist crowds, preserving its serene and spiritual atmosphere. According to the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), the temple is an east-facing structure, typical of Shiva temples built during the Kakatiya dynasty.

 

The entire temple is constructed on a two-foot-high platform, with two main architectural components: the antarala (vestibule) and the garbhagriha (sanctum sanctorum). The antarala is a small vestibule that serves as an entryway to the larger garbhagriha. The sanctum sanctorum houses a unique shivalinga placed atop a jaladhari or yonipitha, an architectural feature symbolizing the union of Shiva and Shakti. The placement of the shivalinga is a significant aspect of the temple’s design, emphasizing its spiritual importance. Adding to its sacred ambiance are two beautifully crafted statues of Nandi, Shiva’s loyal bull, placed in front of the temple. The Nandi statues are depicted bowing in reverence toward the shivalinga, a traditional feature in Shiva temples that symbolizes devotion and submission to the divine. The Singhaigudi temple is believed to have been constructed during the reign of the Kakatiya dynasty, which is renowned for its contribution to art, culture and architecture in southern India.
