“Whatever I am today, I owe it to the city,” Dr Nitesh Sood, a top Cardiac Electrophysiologist expressed, his voice resonating with sincerity. Born and raised in Nagpur, Dr Nitesh completed his undergraduate studies at Government Medical College, Nagpur, before venturing to Georgetown University in US for further education. Now, after 14 years, he returned to his roots for a visit.
Dr Sood, who holds a prominent position as Assistant Clinical Professor of Medical Science at Brown University and directs the Atrial Fibrillation programme at Southcoast Health Systems in Masachussets, didn’t mince words about his formative years.
“The foundation laid here,” he emphasised, “weren’t just about medicine, but the rock-solid Indian work ethic that’s stayed with me”.
He spoke of the difficult yet ultimately life-altering decision his father, Dr Ajay Sood, a noted ophthalmologist, took, encouraging him to pursue a career in the US.
Comparing the medical systems of India and USA, he observed, “India’s system is more robust and entrepreneurial. The US is more doctor-focused, offering a better work-life balance. But the work culture here? Outstanding.” He humorously added, “I don’t think I would survive in India given the amount of work people put in, is just mind-blowing.”
He further stated, “The positive about the medical system in India is that you are sort of your own master, as doctors usually have their own clinics/hospitals.”
His journey, he confessed with a touch of awe, “Not in my wildest imaginations could I have thought I’d be where I am today.”
