With the aim to increase public participation in strengthening the traffic system, the Nagpur City Traffic Police have launched a dedicated WhatsApp helpline number, 8976897689, named ‘Traffic Mitra.’
Commissioner of Police Dr Ravinder Kumar Singal and DCP Traffic Archit Chandak jointly launched the new helpline during a press conference on Friday.
DCP Chandak informed that a team of seven police personnel, led by a Police Inspector, will manage the system. The team will be stationed at the Command and Control Centre (COC) and will receive complaints and information from citizens via WhatsApp.
After receiving the information, the police will cross-check it through CCTV cameras at the COC. If the information is verified, they will instruct the concerned traffic division to take action. The traffic police will then reach the location and resolve the issue.
Complaints regarding traffic jams and traffic violations can be lodged via the helpline number. For example, if a citizen spots a wrongly parked car, they can take a picture and send it to the helpline. Similarly, if someone notices a traffic jam at any location, they can report it through the helpline number.
