IF YOU have ever wondered why
traffic signals remain green for
20 seconds even when no vehicle is passing from a square, a
solution is on the way. A next generation traffic management
system is set to transform the
city’s traffic management in coming months.
With introduction of the new
system, traffic signals will adjust
the timings based on the realtime vehicle movement and
ensure smoother traffic flow by
reducing unnecessary waiting
time for vehicles.
The Integrated Intelligent
Traffic Management System
(IITMS) will be implemented
as a pilot project in 10 locations
within three months.
The existing traffic signals in
the city will be upgraded to this
AI-powered system within a year
for a more efficient and responsive traffic system.
Deputy Commissioner of
Police (DCP) Traffic Archit
Chandak informed ‘The
Hitavada’ that the pilot project
would be rolled out at LAD
Square, Abhyankar Square,
Shraddhanandpeth Square, Ajit
Bakery Square, Shankar Nagar
Square, Bajaj Nagar Square,
Laxmi Nagar Square, Alankar
Square, Kachipura Square and
Deekshabhoomi Square.
The advanced system will
analyse the daily vehicle count
and adjust traffic signal timings
accordingly. It will improve the
overall flow of traffic in the city,
he claimed.
The Rs 200 crore project was
approved by the State
Government and is being implemented by Kerala-based company Keltron. The system will
monitor and record vehicle
movement data every day
through the cameras and using
artificial intelligence (AI). It will
optimise traffic signals dynamically as per real-time conditions. Apart from improving traffic flow, the IITMS will also
introduce automatic violation
detection.The new system will
have cameras capable of
detecting traffic violations
including signal jumping,
crossing stop lines, riding without a helmet and driving without a seatbelt. After detecting
the violation, the system will
automatically issue e-challans
without the need for manual
intervention.
CCTV Network
Integration
THE 2,200 new IITMS cameras
will be integrated with the city’s
existing 4,500 smart city CCTV
cameras for quick monitoring and
traffic issue detection. The system does not need human interference for issuing e-challans
which was not the case earlier.
