In a poignant tale of resilience and divine providence, a woman who went missing for 15 hours during a chaotic stampede at the Maha Kumbh Mela miraculously returned home safely after two harrowing days. Her arrival was met with a euphoric celebration, as elated family members and neighbours adorned her with garlands, orchestrating a grand homecoming with musical fanfare. Overcome with emotion, she wept profusely, her tears reflecting both the trauma endured and the overwhelming joy of reunion.

 

This heart-rending episode unfolded when Asha Devi, a 47-year-old resident of Purani Toli, embarked on a sacred pilgrimage to Prayagraj alongside her relatives, including Shobha Devi (38), Kalavati Devi, Pushpa Devi (40), Amit Singh (33), and brother-in-law Balram Singh (53). The group arrived at the revered site post-midnight on January 28th, eager to partake in the ritualistic holy dip. However, what was meant to be a spiritually enriching experience soon turned into an ordeal of distress. On January 29th, as the pilgrims navigated through an overwhelming sea of devotees, an abrupt directive from the police to retreat inadvertently triggered a stampede. Panic-stricken individuals jostled against one another, culminating in a tumultuous surge.

 

The catastrophic moment led to three tragic fatalities and an incalculable wave of despair. Amidst this bedlam, Asha Devi was inadvertently separated from her kin, swallowed by the relentless human tide. For 15 gruelling hours, she wandered in a state of despair, desperately seeking familiar faces amidst the throng. Her family, gripped by mounting anxiety, scoured the mela grounds with unwavering determination. Eventually, in an almost cinematic twist of fate, she was rediscovered at the mela site, shaken yet unharmed. Her husband, Rajkishore Singh, a newspaper distributor, expressed profound gratitude for her safe return, declaring that nothing in life holds greater value than family.

 

A relative sustained minor injuries in the mayhem, but the sheer relief of survival eclipsed all wounds. Back home, the anxious household had been fervently praying for her well-being, their supplications culminating in a joyous reunion on January 30th. As Asha Devi stepped into her home, she was welcomed with an outpouring of affection, walking over a path strewn with flowers.
