Mungantiwar fetes chess prodigy Pohane
 
Nihaan Nitin Pohane, a 12-year-old prodigy from Mount Carmel Convent High School, Chandrapur has been making remarkable strides in the chess world since the age of 6. His journey includes numerous victories in local tournaments, a notable 5th position in the 2022 Maharashtra State Under 13 Chess Championship in Nagpur, and a commendable 5th rank with a cash prize of INR 28,000 at the Under 11 National Chess Championship in Gurugram, Haryana. Recognising his national accomplishments, Nihaan was honored by Cabinet Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar the other day. In 2023, he clinched the 5th spot in the State Inter-School Chess Tournament in Sindhudurg, earning him a coveted spot in the national competition.
 
Recently, he secured the top position in the district-level Chess Championship at the Shri Mata Mahakali Krida Mahotsav, competing in the open category. Additionally, Nihaan triumphed in the District Rapid Chess Championship in Bhadravati, claiming a cash prize of Rs 7,000 and a well-deserved trophy on April 30. His outstanding achievements were further acknowledged with the prestigious Chandrapur Gaurav Award in 2023. Over the past few years, his dedication to the game has been nurtured under the expert guidance of Amol Markande at the Fischer Chess Academy in Mumbai.
