In the ever-evolving landscape of Indian aviation, a new milestone has been set with the introduction of Electronic Personnel License (EPL) for pilots. At the forefront of this transformation is Captain Ishita Bhargava, a trailblazer who has imprinted her name in history as the first pilot in India to receive EPL. This achievement is not just a personal triumph for her but also a landmark moment for the Indian aviation sector, symbolising the nation’s stride toward digitisation and efficiency.

Born and brought up in Jabalpur, Captain Ishita Bhargava’s journey to the cockpit has been one of passion, dedication and firm perseverance. She completed her early education at Christ Church Girls’ Senior Secondary School, Jabalpur, before embarking on her dream career in aviation. She pursued her flying training at the prestigious Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Uran Akademi and is currently in her third year of a Bachelor of Science in Aviation at the Institute of Aviation and Aviation Safety. Coming from a supportive family, with her mother Bhargava a homemaker and father Rajat Bhargava managing a business in MRF tires and real estate, Ishita credits her family’s encouragement as a foundation of her success. Her deep connection with her hometown, Jabalpur, has played an integral role in shaping her aspirations. The city’s natural beauty, rich cultural heritage and tranquil environment provided her with the perfect backdrop to dream big and aim high. Now, as she takes a step forward in her career with the groundbreaking EPL, she stands as an inspiration for aspiring pilots, especially young women, proving that perseverance and passion can break any barrier. In an exclusive interview, Captain Ishita Bhargava shares her thoughts on the significance of EPL, her journey to becoming a pilot, challenges she faced and her vision for the future of aviation in India. She also offers valuable observation and motivation for those looking to soar to new heights in their careers.

Q: Captain Ishita, how does it feel to be the first pilot in India to receive Electronic Personnel License (EPL)?
A: It is truly an honour and a moment of immense pride for me. Being the first recipient of EPL is not just a personal milestone but also a significant step forward for the Indian aviation industry. It symbolises the progress we are making in digitisation and efficiency and I am grateful to be part of this transformation.

Q: Can you share with us what EPL is and how it benefits pilots?
A: The Electronic Personnel License (EPL) is a digital version of traditional pilot license, allowing pilots to manage their credentials online through a secure platform. This eliminates the need for physical documentation, making it easier to update and verify licenses instantly. It also reduces bureaucratic delays and ensures greater transparency, which is a huge advantage for pilots and regulatory authorities alike.

Q: India is only the second country in the world after China to implement EPL. What do you think this means for the future of Indian aviation?
A: This is a testament to India’s commitment to modernisation and global competitiveness in aviation. By adopting digital solutions like EPL, India is streamlining its regulatory processes and setting new standards in efficiency. This will not only benefit Indian pilots but also attract more aviation professionals and investments into the sector, strengthening our position on the global stage.

b Q: EPL was launched by Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu recently. What was your reaction when you learned that you were the first recipient?
A: I was both surprised and elated. It is a privilege to be the first pilot in India to receive the EPL, and it reinforces my belief in the power of digital transformation. This initiative will make life easier for pilots across the country, and I am proud to represent this shift toward a more efficient and technology-driven aviation sector.

Q: You completed your pilot training at the Indira Gandhi Institute of Aeronautics in Uttar Pradesh. Can you tell us about your journey to becoming a Captain?
A: My journey has been a mix of hard work, determination, and an unwavering passion for flying. Like many aspiring pilots, I faced challenges from intensive training schedules to rigorous exams. But every hurdle strengthened my resolve. The support of my mentors and family played a crucial role in my success, and earning my double stripes was one of the most rewarding moments of my life.

Q: Your achievement is a source of inspiration for aspiring pilots, especially young women. What message would you like to share with them?
A: My message is simple; believe in yourself and never let societal norms define your limits. Aviation is a field that welcomes passion, skill and dedication, regardless of gender. Challenges are a part of the journey, but with perseverance and the right mindset, you can achieve anything. I encourage more young women to pursue their dreams fearlessly and make their mark in the skies.

Q: What are some of the biggest challenges you faced during your training and how did you overcome them?
A: One of the biggest challenges was maintaining resilience during demanding training sessions and examinations. Aviation training requires both mental and physical endurance. There were moments of doubt, but I stayed focused by reminding myself why I started this journey. I also sought guidance from experienced pilots and mentors, which helped me stay motivated.

Q: Now that pilots can manage their licenses digitally through a mobile app, how do you think this will improve the efficiency of aviation record-keeping?
A: This is a game-changer for aviation record-keeping. The ability to access, update and verify licenses instantly through a secure platform will significantly reduce paperwork and administrative delays. It also enhances accuracy, minimises errors and improves compliance monitoring, which is crucial for maintaining high safety standards in aviation.

Q: As a pilot, what are your future goals and aspirations? Are there specific milestones you aim to achieve in your career?
A: My ultimate goal is to keep growing as a pilot and contribute to the advancement of Indian aviation. I aspire to take on leadership roles within the industry, mentor aspiring pilots and perhaps even be part of initiatives that enhance aviation safety and technology. Likewise, I hope to inspire more young individuals, especially women, to take up careers in aviation.

Q: Finally, how do you see the future of aviation evolving with digital advancements like EPL and what role do you hope to play in it?
A: The future of aviation is undoubtedly digital. From electronic licenses to AI-driven flight management systems, technology is reshaping the industry for the better. EPL is just one step toward a more integrated and efficient system. I hope to continue being part of this transformation—whether through advocacy, mentorship or by embracing new technologies in my own career. Digital advancements will make aviation safer, smarter, and more accessible and I am excited to see where this journey takes us.
