In a rare and extraordinary medical case, a 29-year-old male who had been suffering from right lower limb tingling, muscle weakness, and wasting for nearly a decade was successfully treated at Neurospine Hospital and Revive Critical Care (NHRCC).
The patient, who had consulted several doctors over the years, arrived at the OPD with persistent symptoms but retained the ability to walk. The patient was counseled about the high-risk surgery, which could have resulted in complete lower limb paralysis and loss of urinary sensation.
Despite the risks, he opted for the operation due to the long-standing discomfort.
The tumor was removed using a high-resolution operating microscope by the lead neurosurgeon, while the abdominal extension was excised by Dr. Sumit Gathe, a senior oncosurgeon. To their astonishment, the tumor contained approximately 500 cc of pus-like fluid, along with two bowls full of hair and skin tissue — classic features of a teratoma.
The surgery, performed under general anesthesia administered by Dr Prajakta Bijwe, was successful, and the patient was monitored by Dr Neha Goenka Agrawal, and Dr Vivek Agrawal, Intensivist, at Revive Critical Care. This case highlights the importance of advanced imaging and accurate diagnosis. The NHRCC is on Wardha Road, Dhantoli.
