The human-tiger encounter in Chandrapur district has reached a boiling point with one human being killed in a tiger attack every alternate day. In the last 72 hours, five persons died in the district alone in tiger attack, raised panic among citizens.
On third consecutive day, a 30-years old lady was killed in a tiger attack in Mul range of buffer zone of Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR) on Monday. The deceased has been identified as Bhuvaneshwari Bhendre (30), who had gone to jungle to collect Tendu leaves on Monday morning, informed a senior forest officer of buffer zone of TATR.
According to the sources in the forest officer of TATR, the deceased Bhuvaneshwari had gone to the forest with her family to collect Tendu leaves in the jungle area at 7 am.
However, a tiger pounced on the her and killed her. The incident took place at compartment number 793 of Bhadurni beat of Moharli Range of buffer zone of TATR. Bhuvneshwari was living with her parents at maternal home with her husband at Bhaduni village in Mul tehsil.
After getting the information, a forest team rushed to the spot for inspection. The body was moved to the sub-district hospital in Mul for autopsy, informed a senior forest officer. Meanwhile, the initial compensation was given to the family members and the actual compensation will be given after necessary formalities. On Sunday also, a 65-year-old woman was mauled to death by a tiger in Mul of Chandrapur district. The incident comes a day after three women were killed in a similar attack in the district.
The victim, Vimala Shinde, a resident of Nagala village in Mul tehsil, ventured into the forest area to gather ‘tendu’ leaves in the morning when a big cat attacked her.
The most pathetic incident took place on Saturday when three women Kantabai Chaudhari (60), her daughter in-law Shubhangi Chaudhari (38), and Sarika Shende (48), resident of Mendha (mal) village in Sindewahi tehsil, were also killed in Sindewahi forest area by tiger.
All the five deaths, in last three days, happened with those women who went for collecting Tendu leaves in deep forest. During this season, villagers goes to forest areas to collect Tendu leaves for making of Bidi as it is an additional earning source for them. For this extra income, villagers take risk of wild animals as they collect it in the morning time. Whereas, big cats are normally come out of deep forests in search of water when such encounter takes place, informed a senior officer of the forest department.
Troublesome tigress tranquilised

The forest officials of Brahmapuri division, on Monday, have successfully tranquilised the troublesome tigress that reportedly killed three women in Sindewahi range. The operation of capturing the sub-adult cubs of tigress has been launched after the capture of tigress in the division, informed a senior forest officer. According to information, the forest officials reached the spot where the tigress killed three women in the Sindewahi range of Brahmapuri division on May 10. After this incident, camera traps and live cameras were immediately installed at the spot. Based on that, the tigress was tracked.
The identifying the tigress responsible for the incident was confirmed. Rakesh Sepat, IAS, Brahmapuri Forest Department, Brahmapuri, M B Chopde, Assistant Conservator of Forests, Dr Ravikant Khobragade, Veterinary Officer, (Wildlife), Ajay Marathe, Armed Police Force, Chandrapur, Rakesh Ahuja, Biologist, Brahmapuri Forest Department, Brahmapuri, RRT, Chandrapur team swung into the action. After noticing the movements of tigress, the expert shooter Ajay Marathe, fired a dart on tigress and successfully captured the tigress at 1360 in Dongargaon area.
Sindewahi Forest Range Officer Vishal Salkar led and other forest officials from Sindewahi area, PRT members, forest labourers, and vehicle drivers took part in the operation.
According to the tracks taken in the area, the search for the sub-adult cubs of the tigress is underway, informed a senior officer of Chandrapur circle.
