THE 1st VNIT International FIDE Rapid Rating Chess Tournament that aims to provide a platform for the unrated players to get rating and rated players to improve their rating, got underway on Monday. The organisers have got tremendous response to the event as 476 players have registered for the event. The tourney got inaugurated at the hands of Girish Vyas, Vice-President, Maharashtra Chess Association & President, Chess Association Nagpur. CA Rajesh Kalani, Director, Vishvaraj Environment Pvt Ltd was the guest of honour.
 
Prof Gali Hemchandra, Associate Dean, Student Activities & Sports, VNIT presided over the function. Bhushan Shriwas, Organising Chairman & Secretary Kalpana Prakash Welfare Foundation; Dr Ajinkya Bakshi, Professor Incharge, VNIT Chess Club; IA Sonal Tambi were seated on dais. SS Soman, Member, MCA Observer Committee compered the programme and proposed a vote of thanks. The event is being organised by the Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology & Kalpana Prakash Welfare Foundation in association with Chess Association Nagpur. The event is sponsored by Vishvaraj Environment Pvt Ltd and recognised by Chess Association Nagpur, Maharashtra Chess Association, All India Chess Federation and FIDE. Total prize fund of Rs 2.25 lakh is at stake in the event with top prize of Rs 45000 to the winner.
 
Apart from cash prizes to Top 15 finishers, prizes shall also be awarded to Best Veteran, Best Unrated, Best among Rating Categories, Best VNIT Player, Best Female players and specially-abled player. Trophies shall be distributed to various age category players. A team of arbiters including FA Shiva Iyer, IA Sonal Tambi, FA Bharti Dhote, FA Amit Tembhurne, FA Sagar Sakhare, SNA Prayas Ambade, SNA Shishir Indurkar, SNA Shrikant Bagde, SNA Akash Rewatkar, SNA Shyam Agrawal, SNA Aman Sahu, SNA Akash Punde and Prathamesh Machave are taking care of the conduction of the event. The officials of VNIT Nagpur, Kalpana Prakash Welfare Foundation and Chess Association Nagpur are working hard for success of the event.
