THE High Court Bar Association (HCBA), Nagpur, will organise a grand felicitation programme for the newly sworn-in
Chief Justice of India, Justice Bhushan Ramakrishna Gavai,
on June 28 in Nagpur. The announcement was made by
HCBA President Adv Atul Pande, who described it as a
moment of immense pride and honour for the legal fraternity of the region.
A delegation of HCBA office-bearers participated in the
swearing-in ceremony of Justice Gavai at Rashtrapati Bhavan
in New Delhi onTuesday. Following the ceremony, they extended a formal invitation to the Chief Justice to attend the felicitation event in Nagpur, which he graciously accepted.
Justice Gavai, who took oath as the 52nd Chief Justice of
India, was administered the oath of office and secrecy by
President Droupadi Murmu in a special ceremony He assumed charge following the retirement of former
CJI Sanjiv Khanna on May 13,
2025.
Adv Pande noted that Justice
Gavai shares a deep connection with Nagpur, having
served in various capacities,
including as a lawyer and later as a judge at the Nagpur
Bench of the Bombay High
Court. “This is a proud
moment not just for HCBA but
for the entire region. Justice
Gavai’s felicitation will surely
inspire budding lawyers across
Nagpur and Vidarbha to work
diligently towards their goals,”
he said.
He also stressed that the
HCBA is fully committed to
making the felicitation programme a grand success.
Justice Bhushan Gavai was
born on November 24, 1960,
in Amravati. He is the son of
late R S Gavai, a prominent
Ambedkarite leader, former
Member of Parliament, and
Governor of multiple states.
Deeply rooted in the ideals of
Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar,
Justice Gavai is a follower of
Buddhism and comes from a
family known for its social
commitment and intellectual
legacy.
A graduate in BA LLB from
Nagpur University (1985),
Justice Gavai began his legal
career by practicing independently at the Nagpur
Bench of the Bombay High
Court in 1987. He served as
Assistant and Additional
Public Prosecutor in 1992–93.
He was appointed as an
Additional Judge of the
Bombay High Court in 2003
and became a permanent
judge in 2005. He was elevated to the Supreme Court on
May 24, 2019.
