Before his recent arrest, Kerala-based student activist Rejaz M Sheeba Sydeek had reportedly visited Nagpur two to three times, according to police sources. His presence in the city, however, went undetected by enforcement agencies at the time.
Sources from police informed that Sydeek had long been under surveillance of the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and Anti-Naxal Operations (ANO).
A dossier had been prepared over the years based on his alleged extremist leanings.
Despite this, his earlier visits to Nagpur had not raised any
red flag.
During interrogation, Sydeek admitted to having visited the city multiple times, though he gave vague explanations about his purpose - citing meetings with friends and organisational work. It was only after he posted an Instagram photo holding a rifle during a recent visit that the agencies were able to pinpoint his location.
Officials say, he arrived in Nagpur on May 5 to meet a girl law student from Symbiosis College and stayed with her in a hotel until May 7. Their visit to a rifle shop led to the photo that triggered his arrest.
Further investigation revealed links to banned outfits like Hizbul Mujahideen and JKLF.
Sydeek has been booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and being interrogated by ATS Nagpur now.
