‘Water Plus’ survey: Bhopal undergoes STP inspection in final leg of ‘Swachh Survekshan 2024’
Staff Reporter :
Bhopal is currently in the crucial final stage of the Swachh Survekshan 2024, with a central inspection team conducting a detailed ‘Water Plus’ survey that includes the rigorous examination of Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) across the city. This vital phase, which began recently, is expected to continue for at least four more days as inspectors meticulously assess the functionality and efficiency of Bhopal’s wastewater treatment infrastructure.
The inspection process is thorough, with teams able to evaluate approximately two to three STPs per day due to the in-depth nature of the assessment. The ‘Water Plus’ protocol under Swachh Survekshan focuses on ensuring that no untreated wastewater is discharged into the environment and that treated water is reused to the maximum extent possible, alongside other
parameters related to liquid waste management.
This component carries significant weightage in the overall Swachh Survekshan rankings.
Adding to the intensity of the ongoing evaluation, on Friday, the inspection team visited and assessed the STPs located at Badwai, Maholi Dham Kheda (both the new technology
and old plants). These
inspections are critical in
determining Bhopal’s compliance with the stringent ‘Water Plus’ standards.
When contacted by ‘The Hitavada’ regarding the ongoing inspection, Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) Official Rajendra Trivedi stated, “The inspection is currently underway, and we are fully cooperating with the survey team. We have made significant efforts in improving our wastewater management systems. We are hopeful and aiming for a top position, ideally the 1st or 2nd rank, in
the Swachh Survekshan 2024 rankings.”
Bhopal has consistently performed well in the Swachh Survekshan in previous years, having been recognised as the cleanest State capital and achieving a 5-star Garbage Free City rating in the past. The city administration has been actively working towards enhancing its sanitation and waste management practices, with a particular focus on strengthening its liquid waste management infrastructure to excel in the ‘Water Plus’ category.
The outcome of this ‘Water Plus’ survey will be a key factor in Bhopal’s final ranking in Swachh Survekshan 2024. The BMC remains optimistic that their efforts and the successful inspection of the STPs will contribute significantly to achieving their goal of securing one of the top positions nationally. The city awaits the final results with anticipation as the inspection phase concludes in the coming days.
