Tears filled a mother’s eyes as she held her five-year-old daughter tightly, just after the child was rescued from a kidnapper. What could have become a very painful incident was stopped in time on Sunday evening, thanks to the quick and brave work of the Beltarodi Police. Within just one hour, they found and arrested the accused, who already has a murder case against him and safely brought the scared child back to her mother. The city, still shaken by child kidnapping cases in the past, breathed a sigh of relief for the fast action taken by the police.

The incident took place around 4 pm near Tripti Hotel on Wardha Road, where the mother, a 30-year-old woman living in Gausimanapur area, was waiting for a bus with her daughter. She was on her way to work at a hotel in Hingna, while her husband works as a farmer in the same area. Suddenly, Surya alias Milind Baghel (29), a known criminal and drug addict from Butibori, approached them. Surya, who previously worked with the woman at Rajgharana Hotel two years ago, took the girl in his arms on the pretext of speaking and then fled in an auto-rickshaw. Soon after, he called the woman and demanded a ransom of Rs 25,000 and threatened to kill the child if the money was not paid. The terrified mother immediately informed her family and the police. Beltarodi Police Station in-charge Mukund Kavade took the matter in his hands and quickly formed four search teams.

The police traced Surya’s mobile location and advised the mother to keep him on call. She offered Rs 10,000 and asked to meet in Dongargaon. Although Surya later switched off his phone, police teams in plain clothes began a search operation from Dongargaon to Butibori. Fortunately, the accused arrived in Dongargaon with the child in an auto, where alert officers intercepted and arrested him on the spot. The child was rescued and immediately handed over to her mother, who broke down in tears and thanked the police with folded hands. Surya, who has a criminal record including a murder case registered at Hingna Police Station, was arrested by the police. The girl was found and rescued even before a formal case could be registered.
