Untrained people check only central vision and recommend number, which is wrong practice
Some companies are sending their teams door-to-door for the eye examinations who recommend the spectacles of a particular number to the person. This trend is very dangerous and can cause serious damage to the eyes of that person, warned the ophthalmologists of Nagpur.
Dr Krishna Bhojwani, noted Eye Surgeon with ABO Eye Institute, said, “Usually, these untrained persons check only central vision and somehow force people to wear specs of a particular number. On many occasions, the people whose proper eye-check up is done don’t need to wear numbered specs. Once a person starts wearing specs when not needed, he or she faces serious problem in future.”
Dr Bhojwani, ex-President of Ophthalmic Society of Nagpur (OSN), explained, “The eye examination involves an eye pressure test, also known as tonometry, which measures the pressure inside your eye, called intraocular pressure (IOP). It also includes field of vision and optic nerve. Eye examination includes many things. But roughly these are the important ones. In the door-to-door eye examinations, the tests which I mentioned are not conducted. In these type of superficial eye check-ups, the ailments like glaucoma are likely to remain undetected. It may lead to person losing eyesight.”
The damages in eyes, if any, usually start taking place from sides. They are not noticed easily. This gradual damage can only be identified if the eye examination is done in a proper manner and in regular intervals. On social media, one advertisement comes where the specs are being promoted which adjust the number as per the user’s requirement. Such Contd from page 1
methods make people get procrastinated and avoid going to doctors resulting in eye damage.
Dr Manoj Oberoi, noted Ophthalmologist and former President of OSN, advised, “Instead of getting eye examination done at homes, people should approach their eye specialists after every six months. Those suffering from diabetes, hypertension should always remain that they must be in touch with their ophthalmologists. I know a person who gets his all tests done during his birthday. It is his birthday gift to himself. Early detection is always helps in reducing the damages.”
Dr Gopal Arora, former President of Maharashtra Ophthalmolocial Society and an office-bearer of All India Ophthalmological Society (AIOS) pointed out that eye tells the ailments.
He narrated an example of a pregnant woman who had blurred vision. Her detailed eye check-up was conducted which finally detected tumor in her brain. The surgery was performed on her which gave new lease of life to the woman. Dr Arora appealed people to not to ignore the symptoms visible in eyes. “Eye is a delicate and an important organ. Unfortunately, people ignore it. They approach ophthalmologists only when eye causes unbearable pain. According to ophthalmologists, if a person has any damage inside body, the first reaction comes from the eye. Unfortunately, this organ is being neglected a lot due to lack of awareness even among doctors,” regretted Dr Viral Shah, President of Vidarbha Ophthalmological Society.
