A PUBLIC interest petition has been filed before the Chief Justice of India in connection with the catastrophic crash of Air India Flight AI171 near Ahmedabad on June 12, which claimed dozens of lives, including those of resident doctors from BJMC Medical College. “This tragic aviation disaster is not only a human catastrophe but also a systemic failure warranting judicial intervention,” said Supreme Court advocate Satyam Singh Rajput, who filed the petition on behalf of Dr Saurav Kumar and Dr Dhruv Chauhan. “We have respectfully requested the Supreme Court to exercise its constitutional jurisdiction and take suo motu cognisance of the crash.”

The plea highlights the urgent need for accountability and compensation, pressing for directions to the Union Government and Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for declaring ex gra- tia relief to the victims’ families. “There must be interim compensation awarded without delay. Several victims were young medical professionals who served the public. Their families deserve dignity, clarity, and restitution,” the plea stated.
