In a significant move to untangle the persistent traffic snarls plaguing Jadhao Square near Ganeshpeth Bus Stand, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has started construction of a new roundabout. This initiative promises to bring much-needed relief to commuters navigating this notoriously congested junction, a vital artery in the city’s transport network. Rahul Deshmukh, Deputy Engineer (Civil) at the NMC, highlighted the strategic importance of the new roundabout in an interaction with ‘The Hitavada’. “The roundabout will be instrumental in resolving the existing traffic congestion issue at this critical junction,” Deshmukh stated, emphasising the civic body’s commitment to improving urban mobility. The design of the new roundabout incorporates a generous carriageway of approximately 10 metres, ensuring ample space for a two-lane flow of traffic.

Addressing potential concerns about the roundabout’s substantial diameter, Rahul Deshmukh explained that this larger design is a deliberate choice. “The big diameter will enable big buses to maintain lane discipline while turning,” he clarified, indicating a forward-thinking approach to accommodate various vehicle sizes and promote smoother transitions. A key aspect of the construction methodology involves minimising disruption to the already bustling traffic. The NMC plans to conduct the entire construction work within a temporary roundabout demarcated by drums. This innovative approach aims to ensure that daily commuters experience minimal inconvenience, allowing traffic to flow relatively unhindered during the construction phase.

Furthermore, the NMC is not solely relying on infrastructure. Rahul Deshmukh revealed a crucial collaboration with the traffic police to tackle the long-standing issue of illegal parking by private buses and auto-rickshaws in the vicinity of Jadhao Square. This combined effort of improved infrastructure and stringent enforcement is expected to create a more disciplined and efficient traffic environment. Once completed, the Jadhao Square roundabout is poised to transform the daily commute for thousands, offering a more streamlined and safer passage through one of city’s busiest intersections.
