RAIPUR,

Arokiaraj U, a Senior Nursing Officer in the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS) at AIIMS Raipur, has developed a groundbreaking device named the Highly Oxygenated Aerosol Controlled (HOAC) Combo. This innovative respiratory support unit, recently granted a utility patent by the Indian Patent Office, New Delhi, promises to revolutionize infection control during crucial medical procedures. The HOAC Combo is designed as a closed-system, effectively reducing the risk of airborne infections during nebulization, sputum sampling, incentive spirometry, and low-flow oxygen therapy. Its unique design offers enhanced protection for both patients and healthcare workers.

The HOAC device is currently progressing into its functional prototype development phase, with active efforts underway to secure vital funding. This will be followed by crucial pilot studies and rigorous clinical validation, paving the way for its widespread implementation not only across India but also globally. Arokiaraj U. showcased the HOAC Combo at the India Innovation Summit 2025, held recently at the Bharat Mandapam Convention Centre in New Delhi. The prestigious event was organized by the Department of Health Research (DHR) and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

Further solidifying its recognition, the HOAC device has also been featured on the ATLAS of Innovation platform, a highly regarded research platform dedicated to supporting the development of new technologies for TB elimination. Lt. Gen. Ashok Jindal (Retd), Executive Director and CEO of AIIMS Raipur, extended his heartfelt congratulations to Arokiaraj U., hailing the development of this medical device as a “significant achievement for AIIMS Raipur.” In recognition of his exceptional contribution, AIIMS Raipur has nominated Arokiaraj U. for both the National Florence Nightingale Award and the National Science Award 2025, with results eagerly anticipated. Arokiaraj U. expressed his deep gratitude to the Medical Superintendent, the CTVS department, and the entire AIIMS administration for their support and invaluable guidance throughout his research endeavor.
