JANJGIR-CHAMPA :
WHEN financial hurdles threatened to shatter the dreams of a promising softball player from Chhattisgarh, a timely intervention from Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai turned despair into determination.
Twelve-time national player Shalu Dahariya, selected to represent India in the upcoming Asia Youth Softball Championship in Xi’an, China, had been facing the prospect of missing the opportunity of a lifetime, until she received a surprise video call from the Chief
Minister himself. Not only did he convey his personal wishes for her success, he also assured her of the full financial support required to compete at the international stage.
The tournament, slated to be held from July 14 to 20, 2025, features participants from across the continent. Shalu is one of only two women from Chhattisgarh selected for the Indian contingent. However, the participation fee of Rs 1.70 lakh was proving to be a barrier
her family could not cross
on their own.
Hailing from a modest household in Janjgir-Champa district, Shalu’s father is employed as a private security guard, while her mother runs a small beauty parlour. Despite financial constraints, Shalu began playing softball in Class 8 and went on to represent Chhattisgarh at the national level 12 times, earning a gold medal along the way.
Moved by her resolve and merit, Chief Minister Sai spoke to her via video call and encouraged her to continue pursuing her passion without fear.
“Daughter, move ahead… we are all with you. Chhattisgarh is proud of you. Play well and bring glory to both state and country,” he said during the interaction.
Following his directive, Janjgir-Champa Collector Janmejay Mahobe handed over a cheque of Rs 1.70 lakh to Shalu and extended his best wishes for her journey to China.
The support, officials said, was arranged under the CM’s discretionary fund as part of the state’s commitment to nurturing grassroots talent. Shalu’s mother Alka Dahariya expressed gratitude for the government’s gesture. “This timely support has opened the gates of international competition for my daughter. We had lost hope, but today we are filled with pride and gratitude,” she said. Chief Minister Sai’s move reflects a shift from symbolic gestures to substantive support for young talent. “Our government doesn’t just celebrate daughters; we walk with them, especially when they need a shoulder. Empowering dreams is our responsibility,” the CM said.
The story of Shalu Dahariya stands as a compelling reminder of how direct and decisive action can transform aspiration into achievement. It is also a quiet yet powerful commentary on the kind of state support that doesn’t wait for accolades but ensures deserving talent never falls short of opportunity. With renewed confidence and the weight of an entire state’s hopes on her shoulders, Shalu is now preparing to take the field in Xi’an—ready to bat not just for her team, but for every young girl whose dreams deserve a fighting chance.
