State PWD Minister Rakesh Singh discusses roadmap for development of Thakurtal as a unique and natural trourist destination
The Minister informed that a zoo and rescue centre near Thakurtal will be developed and visitors will be able to see lions, tigers and leopards coexisting in one zone

State Public Works Minister Rakesh Singh visited Thakurtal area nestled in the Madan Mahal hills on Sunday and held detailed discussion regarding its development as a unique and natural tourism destination. Accompanied by Chief Conservator of Forests Kamal Arora and Divisional Forest Officer Rishi Mishra, Singh surveyed the area and advocated for eco-friendly development of the site. Terming Thakurtal a ‘marvel of nature’, Singh said the scenic beauty matches the monsoon charm of India’s northeastern states.

The area, which includes pure forest land and a hilltop lake that retains clean water even in peak summer will be developed in a way that enhances the tourist experience without disturbing the natural ecosystem. The Minister informed that a walking trail is proposed around the lake and a sacred a havan kund (fire altar) built by warrior queen Rani Durgavati will be preserved and highlighted as a heritage site. Covering an area of about 250 hectares, the forest includes a unique vantage point in the ‘Chikni Ghatiya’ area, about 130 feet above ground level from which visitors will be able to enjoy panoramic views of Sangram Sagar, Madan Mahal Fort, Bajnath Math and other landmarks. Singh said proposals also include adventure tourism like zip-lining between hills flanking Sangram Sagar and rock climbing trails on the Madan Mahal slopes.

Facilities like a cafeteria and bio-toilets will be constructed to ensure a comfortable experience for tourists. Singh informed that although the Dumna Nature Reserve was initially proposed for a Tiger Safari, a court order halted that plan. Now, a zoo and rescue centre near Thakurtal will be developed and visitors will be able to see lions, tigers and leopards coexisting in one zone. The area is also set to be promoted as a bird haven due to the presence of many rare avian species.

He said the spectacular natural site will also serve as a center for forest bathing therapy. A new pathway will be built connecting Sangram Sagar directly to the watchtower at Chikni Ghatiya. Singh emphasised that unlike other destinations that offer only one type of tourism, Thakurtal is a rare blend of wildlife, eco and adventure tourism, making it a potential centerpiece in Jabalpur’s t ransformation into a major tourism hub. Singh said he has always believed in Jabalpur’s potential as a tourism destination. The addition of Thakurtal will be a landmark development not just for the city, but for the entire Mahakoshal region.
