BILASPUR,
STUDYING MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) in Hindi has become a tough job for students. Most of the students complained that they were unable to understand the Hindi medical terms and preferred studying in English.
Chhattisgarh Institute of Medical Sciences (CIMS) has become the first medical college to offer MBBS in Hindi. But students do not seem interested in studying MBBS in Hindi. The CIMS management had spent about Rs 8 lakh to purchase books to offer medical education in Hindi, but this plan of the government seems to be falling apart as these books available in the Central Library are today lying useless. It was expected that the students would prefer study medicine in Hindi. But despite several months, not a single MBBS student went through these books clearly showing that they are not interested in studying medicine in Hindi.
According to the students, Hindi words are very difficult. While in English one word is used for a medical term, in Hindi there are many synonyms for it. Besides, in many cases, they are unable to understand the medical terminologies mentioned in Hindi. Moreover, for further studies, the post graduation courses will be in English only due to which students do not want to study MBBS in Hindi. An MBBS student said that despite being a Hindi medium student, he is studying MBBS in English as he can’t understand the language in the Hindi in MBBS books. He said that there are also many words for one medical term in Hindi which is more confusing for them.
A first year MBBS student said that it was very difficult to study MBBS in Hindi. With multiple words for different medical terms, reading in Hindi muddles their head.
Dean of CIMS Dr Ramanesh Murthy said that following orders of the government, Hindi books were purchased for MBBS students. “This will help the students a lot and will be used more during exams,” he claimed.
