As monsoon is around the corner, cases of snake-bite have increased in city. In last 15 days, two such cases have come to light. In a recent incident, a snake-catcher (Sarpamitra) Aniket Uikey (24) was bitten by a cobra while rescuing the reptile from a residential area on Monday morning. As per the information, Uikey, who is a resident of Vihirgaon, got a call on Monday morning about sighting of a snake. He immediately rushed to the spot and started rescue operation. During the search, a 4-5 feet long cobra bit Uikey on his right hand. Despite the snake-bite, Uikey rescued the cobra and put it in a jar. Later, Uikey rushed to a hospital where he could not be treated as the hospital was lacking anti-venom. He faced similar situation on visiting about four more hospital.

Finally, he reached Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) where he was treated and administered anti-venom. After getting the information about the venomous snake, a team of Wildlife Welfare Society led by Secretary Nitish Bhandakkar and Pravin Tule reached GMCH and took the snake with them. Later, the snake was released at city outskirts the same day. Few days ago, a person identified as Sachin Uikey lost his life due to snake-bite. Wildlife Welfare Society appealed sarpamitras in Nagpur to be careful while rescuing snakes during monsoon. The Society also appealed to city hospitals to keep anti-venoms to handle snake-bite victims.
