One particularly hot afternoon, I noticed a bird perch on my window. It looked tired, hungry and thirsty. I wondered if it was injured...or looking for food for its nestlings. In that moment, I realised that in the middle of our busy lives, we often forget that even the smallest creatures around us need care and kindness. That moment changed something in me.
We need these tiny beings around us and yet, we are mindlessly disturbing their ecosystem. The concrete jungles, the heat, the radiation from mobile phone towers...we have left no stone unturned in making life of the beautiful birds difficult. But if there are problems, there ought to be solutions as well.
I thought, why not put plastic bottles to some good use? And so, a couple of them were cut open, holes punched into them, and with the help of a string they were tied to my window grill. One for grains and the other for clean water. And the next morning I was woken up by continuous chirps and tweets as the window was full of birds! So now, the hanging feeders are a fixture in the window.
Food and water is refilled every day and a countless number of wings descend upon the window. And these birds do not need us only in the summers, they need us round the year. One small act can make a big difference. It doesn’t take much to take a small step that can make a big impact. Some food, little water and and a big heart is all it takes.
