On Tuesday, East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem disclosed that Raja was killed with a sharp machete used for tree-cutting, and the murder weapon has been recovered. The post-mortem report confirmed the homicide, intensifying the gravity of the case. Raja’s wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi, remains missing, though her raincoat was found, providing a fresh lead for the ongoing search operation.
Meghalaya police, assisted by drones and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), are conducting an extensive search in the area, but no significant breakthrough has been achieved yet.
Raja’s body was discovered on June 2 in a deep gorge near Weisawdong Falls, 11 days after the couple went missing on May 23 following their visit to Kamakhya Temple.
Raja’s brother, Vipin Raghuvanshi, demanded a CBI investigation, alleging a conspiracy behind the murder. He pointed out that Raja’s wallet, bracelet, ring, chain, power bank, and bag remain unrecovered, raising suspicions of foul play. Vipin accused the Meghalaya police of attempting to suppress the case, urging a thorough probe to uncover the truth. Raja and Sonam, who got married on May 11 in Indore, were on their honeymoon on May 20, travelling from Indore to Bengaluru, Guwahati and then Shillong. Their contact with family diminished after May 23 and their phones went offline on May 24, prompting alarm. When communication ceased, Sonam’s brother Govind and Vipin rushed to Shillong via an emergency flight, joining local police and search teams. Despite efforts, Sonam’s whereabouts remain unknown, deepening the family’s distress and fueling demands for a high-level investigation into the tragic
incident.
