The Kargil Police returned empty-handed after failing to arrest Sunita Jamgade, the city woman who had crossed the Indian border and entered Pakistan last month. Despite travelling to Nagpur and seeking her custody, the Kargil Police team could not secure her arrest due to procedural lapses.
According to sources, Sunita Jamgade had travelled to Srinagar with her son on May 4. From there, she proceeded to Sonamarg and then to Kargil. Leaving her son at a hotel, she allegedly crossed the Indian border into Pakistan. She was nabbed by Pakistani Rangers and interrogated for eight days.
After it was determined that she was mentally ill, the Rangers handed her over to the Border Security Force.
Following her return to India, the Kapil Nagar Police arrested her. Currently, she is in judicial custody in Nagpur Jail.
Meanwhile, the Kargil Police initiated a separate investigation into her illegal border crossing and registered an offence at Kargil. A team of Kargil Police arrived in Nagpur three days ago and sought her arrest through a production warrant.
However, during the court hearing, the Kargil Police failed to produce the required copy of the production warrant from their local court.
As a result, the Nagpur court did not grant permission for Sunita’s arrest and transfer. Without the necessary legal documentation, the Kargil Police were forced to abandon their arrest attempt and return without her, sources said.
