Simple smart solutions needed for safer roads

This is in response to the articles published on June 4 and 5 about the height barriers and related traffic issues in Nagpur. The real problem is not just the barriers or road dividers — it is the poor planning and weak enforcement of our road systems. Nagpur, like many Indian cities, suffers from careless planning, rule violations, and lack of maintenance. The issue is made worse by untrained drivers, poor law enforcement, and inefficient government systems. As a result, large amounts of public money are wasted on fixing the same problems again and again. Experts are already worried about the Rs 97 crore Integrated Intelligent Traffic Management System (IITMS) project. They fear it might also fail due to poor planning and execution.

To truly solve this problem, we need low-cost, easy-to-maintain solutions that don’t rely on constant policing. n Design the approach lanes to the flyover constricted to be 7.5 feet wide, flanked on both sides by 4 feet high, 1 foot thick concrete embankments, extended over a stretch of 33 to 48 feet leading up to the ramp. This physical narrowing makes it physically impossible for heavy vehicles like trucks/buses to enter. n Above the constricted stretch, install an open metal-frame canopy fitted with a series of dangling metal chain curtains, offering a vertical clearance of just 7.5 feet. This design allows only vehicles below 6 feet wide and 6.5 feet high to pass, thereby effectively blocking access to heavy trucks, buses, cranes, and other oversised vehicles — while also deterring any stunt-driving attempts. n Install cat-eyed rumble strips to alert drivers as they approach. Apply reflective yellow-black paint to the embankments for better visibility. Display clear pictograms (e.g., a truck or bus with a red cross) along with bold signage in native languages, English, and easily recognisable symbols. Use LED-backlit boards for traffic information and helpline numbers, ensuring visibility at night. Erect CCTV camera masts at strategic points to monitor and deter violations.
