In a tragic incident, a seven-year-old kid drowned in immersion tank at Kacchi Visa ground in the jurisdiction of Lakadganj Police Station on Thursday. The mishap was waiting to happen and showcases criminal culpability of unplanned construction of a tank in a public place that poses grave risk. Two children had gone for swimming in the tank that was filled with rain water. But there is another version that the child drowned when he went to fetch the ball that had fallen in the tank, which was partially open. The Lakadganj Fire Station received a call about a child missing in the open tank at Kacchi Visa ground.

The time was around 4.30 pm. A team rushed to the spot and the divers found the boy at the bottom of the tank. The firemen said the boy was unresponsive and the waiting police team took him to hospital. The doctors pronounced the kid dead on arrival. Among the two, one of the boys managed to move out safely but the second one, the little one was unlucky. Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has constructed the big tank for facilitating immersion of Lord Ganesh idols. At the time of construction of tank, environmentalists had opposed the idea since many full-grown tress were chopped down for the project. Also, they had expressed fears that tank in a playground could be dangerous.

And the worst fears came true, but that time neither the policymakers nor those in-charge of implementation of the idea were ready to listen and steamrolled the opposition. Meanwhile, the deceased body was identified as Mahesh Komal Thapa (7). He was resident of Ma Uma Society. His father works as guard at the industrial area. The children had gone by bi-cycle for playing in the open ground as rains paused in city after three days of pounding. An eerie silence enveloped the area after news of kid’s death reached the household. The mother was inconsolable. Lakadganj Police are carrying out further investigation into the case.
