spokesperson for the District Congress Committee Bhilai Javed Khan has strongly condemned the Chhattisgarh State Power Distribution Company Limited’s decision to increase domestic electricity tariffs. Khan questioned the State Government’s rationale for raising prices when power supply across major cities like Raipur, Durg, Bhilai, Rajnandgaon, and Bilaspur, as well as rural areas, remains erratic, withfrequent and prolonged outages. Khan highlighted the public’s distress due to the installation of smart meters, which he claims are rapidly inflating electricity bills. He criticized the “shameless” nature of the hike, especially given the government’s assertion that it’s only a 20-paisa per unit increase.
 
He argued that even in low-income households, bills often exceed 100 units, making this a significant burden and “outright robbery,” particularly when consistent power supply is not guaranteed due to lack of maintenance. The Congress spokesperson pointed out the timing of the hike, coinciding with the crucial agricultural season, which will also impact farmers. Khan suggested a cynical motive, stating that it appears the “Sai government has given the electricity department the contract to recover the Mahatari Vandan scheme’s funds,” implying that the Rs 1,000 provided to women will now be recouped through higher electricity bills.
