Nature has once again showcased its bounty at the Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary. A rare carnivorous species, the ‘caracal’, locally known as ‘Syahgosh’, has been captured in camera traps, confirming its presence. This discovery is not only significant for biodiversity but also symbolises the success of Madhya Pradesh’s wildlife conservation efforts.
According to forest officials, an adult male caracal was captured by camera traps installed in the Mandsaur Forest Division. This species is renowned for its shy nature, swiftness and nocturnal habits. Caracals primarily inhabit arid, bushy, rocky, and open grassland areas.
In India, this species is now categorised as endangered and its presence is considered extremely rare.
Officials stated that the dry and semi-arid ecosystem of the Gandhi Sagar Sanctuary provides an ideal refuge for this rare species.
The presence of the caracal is evidence that the sanctuary’s environment is balanced and rich. This discovery is a matter
of pride for Madhya Pradesh, as the presence of this species has been confirmed in a protected area after many years.
The continuous efforts of the Forest Department and the quality of protected habitats have made Gandhi Sagar a safe haven for rare species. This achievement is a milestone in both wildlife research and conservation. Officials attributed this success to the co-operation of the sanctuary staff and the local community, whose efforts have maintained the area as a treasure trove of biodiversity.
