Bhilai Municipal Corporation Commissioner Rajiv Kumar Pandey has issued a warning notice to the Chief General Manager of the Town Services Department of Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) for not cleaning drains in the township area. The notice comes in response to severe waterlogging and public inconvenience caused by clogged drains during the recent monsoon rains.

As per the instructions issued earlier by the District Collector of Durg, BSP management was responsible for ensuring cleanliness in township wards.

This included door-to-door waste collection, preventive measures against mosquito- and water-borne diseases like dengue and malaria, and thorough cleaning of back lanes and roads in both residential and commercial zones. Additionally, the removal of water hyacinth from township drains was to be completed by June 15, 2025, before the onset of the monsoon, to ensure free flow of rainwater.

However, the Bhilai Steel Plant’s Town Services Department reportedly
failed to carry out these tasks. As a result, water hyacinths from township drains flowed into the municipal drains during heavy rain, leading to severe blockages at Junwani and Kosanala culvert points. This caused extensive waterlogging in nearby residential areas such as Sector 6 Railway Station, Bauddh Bhumi, Priyadarshini Parisar, Kosa Nagar, Kosa Nagar Railway Housing, Gandhi Nagar, and Vinoba Nagar. Water entered homes and streets, severely affecting local residents and damaging property. The situation has also raised fears of health hazards and potential loss of life
