Gwarighat police have succeeded in apprehending two accused involved in illegal trade of liquor and seized 310 pouches of illicit liquor and cash of Rs 8500 from him. The arrested have been identified as Umesh Patel (61), resident of Purani Basti in Gwarighat and Surendra Thakur (20), resident of Durganagar.
SHO of Gwarighat police station, Subhashchand Baghel informed that in the intervening night of Friday and Saturday, police received information about Umesh Patel and an accomplice waiting outside his house in Purani Basti with sacks full of liquor, looking for buyers. Acting swiftly, the police raided the location where two men matching the description were spotted standing beside white and yellow sacks.
As the suspects tried to flee, police surrounded and apprehended them. Upon questioning, they identified themselves as Surendra Thakur (20), resident of Durganagar near Railway Station, and Umesh Patel (61), resident of Purani Basti, Gwarighat. A search of their sacks
revealed 310 pouches of liquor worth around Rs 30,000 and Rs 8,500 in cash. Gwarighat police registered a case under Section 34(2) of the Excise Act against the accused. Umesh Patel is a habitual criminal with 45 previous cases under the Excise Act while Surendra Thakur has six cases registered against him involving assault and violations of Excise Act. The accused were apprehended with active working of police team comprised of Head Constable Hark Bahadur Thapa and Constables Gopesh and Sandeep Pandey.
