Khairkar in lead as Pallotti chess begins

BHAVAN’S Bhagwandas Purohit Vidya Mandir, Ashti’s Aarav Khairkar started with twin wins along with several others but took top perch on basis of tie-break point on the opening day of the 15th St Vincent Pallotti Memorial Inter-School and Junior College Chess Championship which is being organised in association with Nagpur District Chess Association. In the second round, Khairkar defeated Raunak Borkar of DD Nagar Vidyalaya to sit at the top with two points. Avanesh Vaidya of BVM, Civil Lines is at the second spot with two points while top seed Shaunak Bodele of Narayana Vidyalayam is at third.
 
Earlier, the tournament was inaugurated by Dr Tapan Dutta, Principal, Nagpur Sharirik Shikshan Mahavidyalaya. Rev Fr George Madeikkal, SAC was the guest of honour. Also present were Dr Fr Anto Kaitharath, Manager; Rev Fr Shine Augustine, Principal; Dr Chhaya Janbandhu, Organising Secretary; and Praveen Pantawane, Chief Arbiter. This year, the championship has drawn participation from 47 schools across Nagpur with over 700 students competing in various age categories. The atmosphere was electric as young chess enthusiasts showcased their skills in the first round, delivering matches filled with tactical brilliance and mental agility. The three-day championship will culminate on July 18, 2025 with prize distribution ceremony to felicitate the winners.
