Pitches Madhya Pradesh as India’s sustainable, cost-competitive textile production hub

On the second day of Chief Minister Mohan Yadav’s Spain visit, the primary focus was on engaging with leading global players in the textile and fashion sector for investment. During a meeting held at Inditex headquarters in Galicia, Spain, Chief Minister Yadav presented Madhya Pradesh as a ‘green, cost-competitive, and traceable production hub’. Extensive discussions were held with senior officials of the Inditex Group regarding business partnerships and the potential for sustainable investment.

Chief Minister Yadav stated that the Madhya Pradesh government is fully committed to global partnerships in the textile sector. He expressed confidence that the presence of a prestigious brand like Inditex would accelerate economic growth, job creation, and green production in the state. He conveyed the state’s readiness to support this partnership at all levels. Madhya Pradesh’s Textile Potential: Chief Minister Yadav highlighted that Madhya Pradesh is one of India’s top raw cotton-producing states, with an annual output of approximately 1.8 million bales (3 lakh metric tons). The state boasts over 15 textile clusters, with centers like Indore, Mandsaur, Burhanpur, Ujjain, and Neemuch leading in textile production. He also informed that the PM Mitra scheme’s Textile Mega Park, being developed in Dhar district by the Government of India, could become an ideal center for sustainable and integrated manufacturing for global brands like Inditex.

Chief Minister Yadav proposed establishing a garmenting unit in this park. Emphasis on Organic Cotton and Sustainability: Chief Minister Yadav stressed that Madhya Pradesh is India’s leading producer of organic cotton. The state, particularly in the Nimad and Malwa regions, produces cotton in abundance. Active GOTS-certified farmer groups are present here, who could be ideal partners for Inditex’s sustainability and traceability policies. Chief Minister Yadav suggested collaborating with Inditex on a farm-to-fabric value chain. He further elaborated that the Madhya Pradesh government promotes ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) values. Water recycling, waste management, and decent work standards are implemented in the state, which perfectly align with Inditex’s responsible sourcing policy. Chief Minister Yadav noted that the annual textile and garment exports from the state exceed Rs 7,000 crore, with the European Union being a major recipient.

He expressed hope that a partnership with a brand like Inditex could push this figure to Rs 10,000 crore, thereby boosting local employment and women’s empowerment. New Industrial and Export Policy- 2025: Chief Minister Yadav shared the salient features of the state’s New Industrial and Export Policy-2025, which includes 90% subsidy on land, 40% capital assistance on machinery, 50% assistance on green technology, and interest subsidy on loans, among others. Chief Minister Yadav invited Inditex to become a supply chain anchor in the PM Mitra Park. He also suggested initiating an organic cotton tracing platform and a vendor development program with ESG-certified MSMEs.
