Operation U-turn by city police a welcome move

After conducting impactful “Operation Thunder” to curb drug menace, Nagpur Police has launched ‘Operation U-Turn’ to combat drunk driving and enhancing road safety. With ‘Operation U-Turn’, city police aims to prevent drunken driving and to spread the message of ‘Every Life Matters’. As per reports, the city witnessed 153 deaths in 142 road accidents causing nearly one fatality every day in 2025. Though the figure reflects a 20% decline in the fatality as compared to the same period in 2024, it is still a big figure to cause anxiety for the safety of commuters. It is a common observation these days that some of the youngsters and even the seniors violate traffic signals. Since many of the CCTV cameras installed at traffic junctions are non-functional and a large number of E-challans are pending for delivery to the offenders, the tendency to violate traffic rules is on the rise. Curbing this foul practice is also the need of the hour.

Therefore, the Nagpur Police may adopt the strict disciplinary procedure of Mumbai Police of apprehending the offenders as soon as they violate the traffic rules. At least, some disciplinary impact should be generated in the minds of traffic rules offenders. These traffic rules offenders who are putting the lives of other law abiding commuters at risk should not go scot free. On road the commuters should strictly abide by the theme of ‘Respect Red and Enjoy Green’. The non-drunken commuters who violate traffic rules should also be taken very seriously as they commit the act in their senses and in full view of others. Therefore, Nagpur Police should also include this aspect in the ongoing ‘Operation U-Turn’ for enhancing road safety.
