Water-logging in 4 mm rains

Despite moderate rains in North, East, and Central Nagpur, the weather observatory located in Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport in Sonegaon recorded only 4 mm rainfall till 5.30 pm in the city on Thursday. The patchy rains in the city, a common occurrence in recent times, have once again mushroomed the debate to increase the number of observatories in city to measure exact amount of rainfall. The day witnessed bright sunshine in the morning all over the city, but the patchy rains lashed city at about 11 am and continued for a few hours. The roads in areas like Sadar, Indora Chowk, Nagpur Railway Station, Wadi, Automotive Square, Shanti Nagar, Jaripatka, Vaishali Nagar etc. witnessed water-logging.

Many students had to traverse through the water after the rain. The water-logging also caused traffic jams at many low lying areas including major junctions of the city. Even the T-point in Wadi was waterlogged to an extent that many vehicles were affected as water entered their silencers and needed help from others for starting again. Water from new Amravati Road flyover comes down through pipes, but its dumped on divider of Amravati Road, from where it flows down the road creating a huge swimming pool on T-point that affects the free flow of the traffic. The Sonegaon area and rest of city, however, received little to no rain on Thursday till writing this report. The report released by the Regional Meteorological Center (RMC) showed only 4 mm of rain on Thursday from 8.30 am till 5.30 pm. On contrary, the weather report for same period on July 15 recorded 29 mm of rain. Incidentally, Sonegaon and Khamla area received substantial amount of rain on July 15, while rest of the city remained dry. The Regional Meteorological Centre rely only on one physical observatory in Sonegaon for all weather readings. With the trend of patchy rains reoccurring in the city, the department must establish observatories in other parts of city as well to get complete and accurate picture.

Water-logging on Tekadi Road near rly station, a regular scene

The Tekadi Road near Nagpur Railway Station has become a new hotspot for water-logging. The road has been concretised after the demolition of flyover last year. A depression has been formed on the road near the entrance of the Nagpur Railway Station after the demolition of flyover, where all the water gets accumulated after rains. Incidentally, more water gets accumulated on the road through the drainage openings on wall of the adjacent Sitabuldi Fort. The stormwater drainage system on Railway Station side of road is proving insufficient to handle this heavy influx of rain water. The accumulated water not only creates issues for auto-rickshaws and taxis that use the space for parking, but also pedestrians and travellers trying to reach station face huge difficulty to reach the station.
