To be at par with changing times, Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) is heralding a substantial change in education system in its schools from this year. NMC has introduced education in Semi-English medium in Class 1 in most of its primary and secondary schools from this year. The Semi-English medium will be introduced in subsequent classes progressively in coming years. Earlier, most of the NMC schools offered education in only Marathi, Hindi, or Urdu medium that was seen as a weak point for the students compared to other students studying in private schools. The NMC provides free education to students across its 117 schools spread over ten zones. These include 100 primary schools (31 Marathi medium, 44 Hindi medium, 18 Urdu medium, and 7 English medium) and 17 secondary schools (7 Marathi medium, 5 Hindi medium, 5 Urdu medium).
However, the majority of these schools continue to impart education solely through Marathi, Hindi, and Urdu mediums. According to information, only 11 NMC schools currently offer semi-English education up to Class 10. Sadhana Sayam, Education Officer, NMC, emphasised the significance of the initiative.
“The syllabus introduced in Class 1 of the Semi-English medium is at par with that of CBSE syllabus.
This will help our students to compete with any student from private school on any platform in future.” For the past two decades, numerous other municipal corporations in cities like Mumbai, Pune, and Aurangabad have successfully converted their schools to semi-English medium. Some have even established CBSE and ICSE board schools. In stark contrast, NMC schools remain solely affiliated to the State Secondary Education Board, with not a single CBSE or ICSE school in sight. Now, with the introduction of Semi-English medium schools from Class 1, the picture seems to be changing. As per sources, currently, 14,637 students are enrolled in the 114 NMC schools, with 4,763 in secondary schools and 9,874 in primary schools. Recently, teachers from NMC schools and officials, including Vaishnavi B, Additional Municipal Commissioner, NMC, engaged in direct dialogue with parents to encourage an increase in student enrollment in NMC schools. This forward-thinking initiative, by aligning with national education standards and developing crucial language skills, promises to be a game-changer for the city’s public education landscape. It’s more than just a language shift; it’s an investment in the future, designed to empower every NMC student to confidently pursue higher education and seize opportunities in a globalised world, ultimately contributing to a more skilled and competitive generation from the city.
NMC to provide workbooks for value-addition of students
The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), for the first time, has invited tenders for printing of books as per a specified list for English language learning under its educational initiative ‘Majhi Shala Saksham Shala’ project. This project focuses on providing educational resources, specifically English language books, to NMC-run schools. The last date of submitting tender was July 17. Normally, the NMC procures books to be supplied for NMC schools from Balbharati. Sadhna Sayam, Education Officer, NMC, informed that the tender is for workbooks of English language to boost language skills in students. “These books were not available with Balbharati and hence, the NMC has invited the tenders for printing of these books,” added Sayam.
