To ensure safety of woman, child and old-age passengers, the South East Central Railway (SECR) has planned to install over 1052 CCTV cameras in its various Express, Passenger and Local Trains. This decision of SECR has brought some relief to the woman passengers and also of senior citizen passengers. But everyone hoped that, SECR will operate these CCTV cameras properly and this service will not stop after few months as like other services. Subhadra Dewangan, a supervisor in food processing unit who use local train every day to reach her workplace at Raipur from Bhilainagar said that proper function of CCTV camera will reduce eve teasing incidences which is now a normal affair in trains.

Though a large number of male passengers are helpful and even offer seats, some of them still harass and this is causing difficulty to them while travelling in the general compartment of local trains. Many of the woman passengers complained that due to absence of RPF and GRP personnel at local trains during evening hours (mostly), some male passengers enter into women’s compartments of the train and even occupy the seats without any fear. The CCTV camera will keep an eye on them and prevent male passengers from entering the women’s compartments of the train. Same is the situation with senior citizen passengers who face difficulties in getting seats in trains as their seats are occupied by younger people. In long distance trains too, passengers without reservation tickets also enter into sleeper berths and cause problems to passengers with reservation tickets. The installation of CCTV cameras will cause fear amongst passengers without reservation tickets to enter into sleeper berths. When contacted, A K Trivedi, Public Relation Officer of SECR Raipur division stated that at initial stage, 1,052 CCTV cameras will be installed and later more cameras will be placed in other trains.
