Speeding overtake bid leads to multi-vehicle collision on Gowari flyover, 4 injured
Staff Reporter :
A high-speed overtaking attempt led to a serious accident early Monday morning on the Shaheed Gowari Flyover, above Janta Square. A Volkswagen Polo, reportedly travelling at high speed, lost control while attempting to overtake another vehicle and collided head-on with a Bolero Pick-Up coming from the opposite direction. The Polo then struck a Tata Zest that was following the Bolero. The crash occurred around 5.45 am, when traffic was relatively thin.
According to the Bajaj Nagar Police, the Polo (MH-46/AM-6447) was heading from Sitabuldi towards Rahate Colony when the driver attempted a risky overtake.
The vehicle first hit the Bolero Pick-Up, which was coming from Rahate Colony Square towards Zero Mile, and then rammed into the Tata Zest trailing behind. The impact caused serious injuries to the Polo’s occupants - Satnam Singh Manjeet Singh Rai (27) and Pawan Ratan Gajbhiye (24), both residents of Nari Road, Nagpur. They were rushed to Government Medical College and Hospital, where their condition remains critical.
Akshay Jugand Dhurwe (23), who was driving the Bolero Pick-Up (MH-28/G-4439), is a resident of Musni, Bhardagadh, Rampur, Junnardev in Chhindwara district, Madhya Pradesh. He sustained minor injuries in the accident.
The driver of the Tata Zest (MH-40/BG-4931), Pintu Purushottam Dadhe (36), a resident of Maharshi Dayanand Nagar, Binaki Nagar, Vaishali Nagar, also suffered minor injuries and was treated and discharged.
Eyewitnesses at the scene reported that the Polo was moving erratically and appeared to be switching lanes aggressively before the collision. A police officer stated that the Polo driver misjudged the available space while overtaking and was travelling too fast to regain control in time.
The sudden loss of control led to the vehicle crashing into the oncoming Bolero Pick-Up and then the Tata Zest behind it.
The accident caused a temporary disruption in traffic on the flyover. Bajaj Nagar Police, led by Senior PI Ajay Mankar, quickly reached the spot, cleared the damaged vehicles, and ensured that the injured were taken to the hospital. The wrecked cars were later taken to the police station, and an offence has been registered against the driver of the Polo. Authorities are now reviewing CCTV footage from the flyover to determine the exact sequence of events.
