Seventh organ donation in last seven months, as cases drop

It is heart-rending for the parents losing their 10-year-old kid. At the same time, they became idols for the society by donating his organs, giving lease of life to 4. In this case, the boy was Kaivalya Khatik. Kaivalya, the son of Nitin and Monali, were was a resident of Thane. Nitin was working as engineer. Kaivalya was their only son. Kaivalya felt uneasy and so was admitted to a hospital at Thane.

Later on, he was brought to New Era Hospital at Nagpur. After a treatment of 10 days, Kaivalya failed to give positive response. After all the tests were done by the doctors immediately and all the lines of treatment were tried, it was found that he had a severe haemorrhage in his brain. His condition deteriorated neurologically and the doctors declared him brain dead. Dr Ashwini Chaudhary, coordinator at New Era Hospital, gave all the information to the family and consulted an organ donor. The family members agreed to donate the organs - two kidneys, a liver, and a heart. Accordingly, the Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre swung into action and through Transplant Coordinator, Dinesh Mandpe, immediately started the next process. The team of doctors who declared Kaivalya brain dead included Dr Nilesh Agrawal, Dr Parag Moon, Dr Vivek Deshpande and Dr Sahil Bansal.

Under the guidance of DCP Traffic, Lalit Matani, two successful Green Corridors were created for organ transport from New Era Hospital. The heart was transported to Nagpur Airport, and the kidney to AIIMS Nagpur. New Era Hospital staff created the honour corridor and paid tributes to the donor and provided free ambulance service up to their native place at Sai Nagar Wadala (Paiku) Tehsil Chimur, District Chandrapur. ZTCC-Nagpur – President Dr Sanjay Kolte and Secretary Dr Rahul Saxena have appealed people to connect to Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre situated at Super Speciality Hospital-Nagpur (helpline contacts are - 9175999735) if any help is needed.
