In a major crackdown on police misconduct, Commissioner of Police Dr Ravinder Kumar Singal dismissed four constables and suspended another on Wednesday after departmental inquiries found them guilty in three separate cases involving extortion, gambling, and attempted kidnapping.
Chain snatching by cops
Two constables from Kalamna Police Station, Sandeep Yadav and Pankaj Yadav, were dismissed from service after they were found guilty of snatching a gold chain from a 19-year-old engineering student on April 13, 2024. The incident occurred near the Outer Ring Road under Wathoda Police Station limits.
The constables had stopped the student and his friend, threatened to frame them under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act, and demanded money. When the youth couldn’t pay, they snatched a three-tola gold chain worth Rs 1.80 lakh and fled. Initially, a case was registered against “unknown persons,” but later, with the help of tower location and social media identification, Pankaj and Sandeep were found guilty and dismissed after a departmental inquiry.
Gambling inside police outpost
In another case, two more constables, Manoj Ghadge and Bhushan Sakde, also from Kalamna Police Station, were dismissed after a video surfaced showing them gambling and smoking inside a police outpost on August 19, 2024. The video went viral on social media, prompting an internal inquiry which confirmed their involvement. Both were found guilty of misconduct while on duty and dismissed.
Constable involved in kidnapping attempt
In a shocking case, Mohsin Khan, a city police constable posted at headquarters, was suspended for his involvement in an attempted kidnapping. Along with three others, Khan tried to forcefully abduct a girl from her home in Lakadganj area. The girl, who worked in MIHAN, was being harassed by one of the accused, Adnan Ayesha Khan, in a case of one-sided love.
The group entered the girl’s home, assaulted her family, and tried to take her away while pretending to be police officers. Locals intervened and caught Adnan, while the others initially fled. All were later arrested, and during the probe, Mohsin Khan’s identity as a serving constable was confirmed. He has been suspended, and further investigation is underway.
